Our History
For over 35 years North York Seniors Centre has been serving seniors and adult with disabilities in the community through quality programs and services.
Some milestones in our history:
- In 1974 a group of seniors approached Mayor Mel Lastman to obtain a place to meet and was granted a storefront in Cummer Plaza, and later relocated to Empress Walk
- NYSC became a United Way Member Agency in 1977
- NYSC moved to 21 Hendon Avenue in April 1987
- NYSC partnered with VON to deliver Adult Day Program at Seneca Village
- In 1987 Community Support Service began delivering in-home respite care
- In 1988 Community Support Services and Adult Day Services moved to 80 Sheppard Avenue
- In 2001 Adult Day Services grew again, with enhanced services and increased program space
- Recreational & social programs are expanded in 2002 at the Active Living Centre
- Funding was received to develop an Elder Abuse Awareness program in 2002
- In 2009, Senior Care received funding through Central LHIN to provide a Supportive Housing Program at 5430 Yonge St. and 35 Park Home Ave.
North York Seniors Centre is proud of the deep roots it has in the community and our ability to grow as an organization and responded to the changing needs of our clients.
