
For over 30 years North York Seniors Centre (NYSC) has been a point of reference for many seniors looking for opportunities to participate in recreational programs or in need of assistance.
The caring staff delivering the Day Away Program, Senior Care services and the varied and engaging calendar of recreational activities offered through the Active Living Centre, make NYSC a very special place! Over 1000 seniors participate annually in the programs and access support services NYSC offers.
Some milestones in our history:
- In 1974 a group of seniors approached Mayor Mel Lastman to obtain a place to meet and was granted a storefront in Cummer Plaza
- North York Seniors Centre moves to Empress Avenue
- NYSC becomes a United Way Member Agency in 1977
- NYSC moves to 21 Hendon Avenue in April 1987
- NYSC partners with VON to deliver Adult Day Program at Seneca Village
- The range of services is expanded in 1997. Community Support Services start delivering in-home respite care
- In 1988 Community Support Services and Adult Day Services occupy new space at 80 Sheppard Avenue
- In 2001 Adult Day Services grow again, with more services offered and more client capacity
- Recreational programs are expanded in 2002, to include programs specific to the pre-retired or newly retired
- In the same year, the organization's by-laws are reviewed to better reflect the Centre's growing program roster
- In 2002, NYSC receives funding to develop protocols for Elder Abuse Awareness program
- In 2003 NYSC undertakes strategic planning activities, resulting in a clearer focus for the organization and in a new mission statement
- In 2004 North York Seniors Centre celebrates its 30th anniversary
