Creative Aging Awareness Week at the ALC

Monday June 1| ALC Mural | All Day | $ FREE
Help us paint a picture of the ALC with your help. Starting on June 1st a mural will be posted at the Centre and we encourage     everyone (staff, members, volunteers and guests) to help us fill it in with the art materials supplied. Once you have contributed to the mural we ask that you sign your name and how long you’ve been part of NYSC. This mural will be up for the week of June 1 – 6.

Tuesday June 2 | Creative Writing Workshop| 1pm – 2pm | $ FREE
A creative writing session for beginners, experienced writers and the curious. Creative writing is a wonderful brainy activity and a great way to tap into our creative expression. In this class, you have the opportunity to write a few short pieces and then have the chance to share your work with others. This is a fun and supportive session that encourages the creative writer in all of us.
Tuesday June 2 | Art Doll Workshop | 10am – 12pm  |$15 – Members | $20 – Non-Members (for 2 days)
Join us for this two-day workshop. The theme is “The Cat” (Decorative Frame). You will create a background for your sculpture, create your sculpture and paint. Materials included in the cost are: acrylic paint, paper clay, fabric, canvas and frames. Refreshments will be served during the workshop. Sign up early as spots are limited!
Wednesday June 3 | Art Doll Workshop Part 2 | 10am – 12pm
Pick up where you left of on June 2nd and finish up your sculpture so that you take home your finished product!             Refreshments will be served during the workshop. Sign up early as spots are limited!

 Wednesday June 3 | Book Reading – “Trip to Provence” by Eugenia Weinerek | 4pm – 6pm | $ FREE
Take a journey through Provence with Eugenia, the author and NYSC member, of this wonderful travelogue of her trip to Provence. There will be a reading from the book and a Q & A period. Refreshments will be provided. Books will be made available to purchase.

 Wednesday June 3 | Paint Nite with Wine Bar | 6pm – 9pm  | $10 – Members | $15 – Non-Members
In just 3 hours, while your sipping a glass of wine, our art instructor will be able to assist you in your freestyle painting so that you create your own unique masterpiece at the end of the evening. We will provide everything you will need for the evening for you to unleash your inner Picasso! All levels welcome and no experience is needed.

Thursday June 4 | “Aging Artfully: Creativity and Aging” | 10am – 11am  | $ FREE

“Creative Aging” is the practice of engaging older adults (55+) in participatory, professionally run arts programs. Dr. Lixia Yang will discuss creativity and how it changes as we age. Research will be presented on wellbeing implications, with a focus on health, social engagement, and skill mastery.

 Thursday June 4 | “Hell’s Grannies” Documentary Premier | 6pm – 8pm  | $ FREE
When 78-year-old Sybil Rampen visits her friend in an old age home, she is struck that she may one day share a similar fate. So, Sybil gathers up seven of her closest friends and does what any sweet, old grandmother would do – she starts a motorcycle gang. Join NYSC, Sybil Rampen and East Hill Productions for the premiere of “Hell’s Grannies.” A Q & A session will follow. Refreshments will be served. The first 14 people who register receive a free copy of the documentary. Sponsored by Delmanor Retirement Communities.

 Friday June 5 | Think Outside the Box – Drama Workshop | 11am – 12pm | $ FREE
Think outside the box and get creative! Join the ALC and Act 2 Studio from Ryerson University who will teach some of the basics of theatre/drama in a fun and supportive environment.

 Saturday June 6| Festival of Smiles | 12pm – 3pm | $13 – Members | $22 – Non-Members
We’ll start with a beautiful lunch featuring fresh seasonal items, then enjoy an afternoon with a “Festival of Smiles,” a series of Cabaret-style performances created by some favourite Smile artists! Spots are filling quickly so sign up today.
