Seniors connected during the Holidays
| December 24, 2020NYSC offers free online activities to help isolated seniors get through the holiday season
From December 24th  to January 1, NYSC will connect seniors and bring joy to those who are alone.
To beat the holiday blues due to physical distancing, North York Seniors Centre is boosting its programming in the end of this year by scheduling virtual special activities throughout the Holiday season. From December 24th to January 1st, seniors living in the community and their caregivers will be able to connect with others, social engage and have fun by participating in holiday storytelling, carolling, arts and crafts, baking, games, parties and more. The total of 16 activities will be offered for free over a live-streaming platform, by phone, and pre-recorded videos will be available on Youtube.
The holiday programming is prepared by a team at the Active Living Centre, who plan social and recreational activities for over 1000 seniors living in North York. “We know a great number of seniors will be alone this year over the holidays. They are all welcome to call in, and hop on for any of the Zoom, or Centre Without Walls – a telephone base program being delivered twice or three times almost every day!” invites Bethany Valentine, Supervisor of the Active Living Centre.
The A Day Away staff team, have pre-recorded videos available on NYSC’s YouTube channel. “We are visiting places like the Distillery District and other neighborhoods to see lights and decorations. We prepared readings, games and sing-alongs. Our goal is to deliver joy, hope and warm up the hearts of isolated seniors wherever they are! “, informs Angel Lau, Supervisor of the program.
The Team at NYSC has found new ways to deliver activities, assist and connect seniors to help them remain active where needed. In the spring of 2020, in-person programs at NYSC pivoted to being delivered 100% online to decrease the gap of social isolation which can lead to depression and health problems. Even though the season celebration can`t be in person, the organization is still providing some joy, good cheer and hope.
