Elder Abuse Awareness Day, 2021
| June 8, 2021On JUNE 15 –
Celebrate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
“Rights don’t get old” is the theme for this year’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). Some of us may not know that this historic day was started by a Canadian nurse, Dr. Elizabeth Podneiks. She was the person who went to the United Nations and got the Day recognized internationally.
The first day was celebrated in 2005, and we continue today to spread the message that elder abuse is wrong and is the ultimate betrayal of trust by people we love or depend on. Dr. Podneiks remains a dynamic force today in dispelling negative societal stereotypes, educating the public and strategizing for elder abuse prevention.
Go to our website’s special section on WEAAD and see how you can be involved in celebrating the day in one or more ways. Thank you.
